A must-read for non-Shanghai resident parents: How to quickly accumulate 120 points for a Shanghai residence permit?

For non-Shanghai-registered families living in Shanghai, there is almost always one number that cannot be avoided—120 points.

This is the standard score for Shanghai residence permit points. If it's enough, your children can take the high school and college entrance exams in Shanghai; if not, they have to return to their hometown after the third year of junior high school. Many parents only start calculating their points when their children are in fifth or sixth grade, only to find they are several tens of points short. By then, it's too late to make up the difference.

How is 120 points calculated?

Shanghai residence permit points are awarded based on a "cumulative index" system. Common bonus items include:

  • Age points: 30 points for those under 43, and points decrease annually for those over 43;
  • Educational background score: Associate's degree 50 points, Bachelor's degree + Bachelor's degree 90 points, Master's degree 100 points;
  • Social security points are accumulated based on the social security base and the number of months of contribution, and generally 3-5 points can be accumulated each year;
  • Professional title/skill points: 100 points for intermediate professional titles, and corresponding bonus points for advanced skills certificates in shortage categories.

Note: The highest score in a single item can be accumulated, but you cannot "enjoy the same level of policy repeatedly".

The three most common ways to score points

Option A: Educational Upgrading. Pursuing a bachelor's degree after a junior college diploma directly jumps the score from 50 to 90, making it the cleanest way. With several years of social security contributions, a score of 120 is practically guaranteed. The program lasts 2.5 years, suitable for families with children still in elementary school and ample time.

Option B: Obtain an intermediate professional title. For example, the intermediate economist or intermediate software engineer qualification exam, which is held once a year and requires 4-6 months of preparation to obtain the certificate, adding 100 points to the score. This option is suitable for older parents who do not wish to continue their education.

Option C: Extend social security contribution period + improve education level. While pursuing a bachelor's degree, maintain continuous social security contributions in Shanghai. After 2.5 years, the combined points for education level and social security contributions will basically meet the requirements.

Two most common pitfalls

First, your social security contribution base must be sufficient. Paying only the minimum base will result in very slow points accumulation, and when applying for permanent residency, you will be required to have an intermediate professional title that matches your job position.

Secondly, the timeline needs to be worked out in reverse. How many years do you have left until your child's high school entrance exam? A degree takes 2.5 years, and a professional qualification requires six months of preparation plus the release of results. Working backwards, the latest time to start becomes clear.

Integration isn't some mystical art; it's a simple arithmetic problem that can be solved. The earlier you start solving it, the more proactive you are.
