Will the red birthmark on my baby's face fade away on its own? 4 things new parents should know.

Many parents find a red mark on their baby's face or body after birth, and their first reaction is, "Is it a birthmark? Is it serious? Will it disappear on its own?"

In fact, red marks and black/brown marks are two completely different types of problems, and the approaches to dealing with them are also different.

First, distinguish whether it is a hemangioma or a port-wine stain.

There are two common types of red marks on newborns: one is a hemangioma, which usually appears within a few weeks after birth, initially resembling a small red dot, and may then grow rapidly, rising above the skin surface; the other is a port-wine stain (commonly known as a red birthmark), which is present at birth, flat and not raised, and its color deepens with age. Some of the former will fade on their own, while the latter generally will not fade on its own and may instead become darker and expand.

II. When should I go to the hospital?

If a red mark appears around the eyes, nose, or forehead, or if it grows significantly larger, protrudes, or ulcerates in a short period of time, it is recommended to have it evaluated by a specialist as soon as possible, rather than "waiting and seeing." Hemangiomas in special locations may affect vision, breathing, and other functions; the longer they are left untreated, the more complicated the treatment becomes.

III. Common Misconceptions: Applying folk remedies or pricking oneself

There are folk remedies such as "rubbing with a gold ring" or "pricking with a needle to let blood out," but these practices have no scientific basis and may even cause infection, scarring, or stimulate further growth of the lesion.

IV. What can be done now?

Modern laser technology can select the appropriate wavelength based on the depth of the lesion and the type of blood vessels, and it has an improving effect on most superficial hemangiomas and port-wine stains. The key is to first have a doctor determine the type and stage before deciding whether to observe and wait or to actively intervene.

If your baby has uncertain red marks, it is recommended to take a photo to record the size and color changes, and have a specialist take a look online before deciding on the next step. There is no need to be overly anxious, but don't ignore it completely either.
